Blue Camry East

Here are highlights of a three-generation road trip, June 2011 -- originating just outside St. Louis, Missouri, pausing many places, and ending in Wayland, Massachusetts.

Cast of characters:  Me (generation #1), Leah (generation #2), and Kaleigh and Gavin (generation #3).

First there was some frolicking, i.e., my first trip
to a Six Flags amusement park. Here we are
about the enter Scary Swamp. Will we ever reappear?

Around and around on the Colossus, a big but tame
Ferris wheel. See the Ozarks in the background.
Notice the wet hair, evidence of our having waltzed
through the sprinkler -- Hot day!
We set off in the pouring
rain. Each kid had a
video camera.
And each had a well-
equipped nest in the
back seat.
We stopped to see the world's biggest candle,
at Warm Glow Candles in Centerville, Indiana.
And a field of giant, statuesque stone corn,
near Columbus, Ohio. Suddenly, it rained again.
We stopped for supper in Ohio, off I71, at the Buckeye Express Diner.

Leah paid a quarter so she and Gavin
could ring the bell. The slot machine must
be a device for keeping peace with
the neighbors.
Ohio is also home to this monument
to Chief Leatherlips (evidently a
complimentary name).

After an overnight in Garrettsville, Ohio, we drove
through Mennonite country. Here is the period-piece
gas station in Mesopotamia, Ohio.
We shopped for breakfast at the totally
satisfactory general store in Mesopotamia . . .

. . . which boasted its own robot . . .
. . . and lots of attractive merchandise.

We rode three of the six antique carousels in
Binghamton and Endicott, NY -- which are testaments
to some concern for the welfare of the laboring family
in the era of the Big Industrialists.

We arrived in Wayland at 2 a.m. on the
second day, slept in, then relaxed
from the trip at Lake Cochichuate's
lovely state park.
That's enough of a blog entry for one day!
